Tree Risk Management Plan

Xyst developed a comprehensive Tree Risk Management Plan designed to prioritise the inspection and maintenance of amenity trees across the district.

This plan is guided by the recently adopted Whakatāne Tree Strategy, which focuses on monitoring and maintaining trees and minimising tree-related safety hazards.

In developing the plan, Xyst conducted a thorough analysis of the existing tree database, incorporating factors such as land use, tree age, condition, and size. This data-driven approach allowed for the creation of inspection precincts and regimes tailored to specific areas. High-use areas with larger or more problematic trees are assigned a more frequent and intensive inspection schedule, while lower-use areas are managed with a less rigorous approach.

All Council-managed land has been mapped into these inspection precincts, offering a clear visual representation of the approach. This mapping serves as a vital tool for both management and communication, ensuring that the strategy can be effectively communicated and executed.

Project Benefit

Xyst worked with Council to develop a proactive management plan which prioritises the inspection of Council’s large amenity tree population across the district based on risk.
